What Is The Potassium Test For?

A potassium test measures the level of potassium in your blood. Although potassium is present in all bodily fluids, the majority is contained within the cells of your body. The amount released into the serum portion of your blood is usually closely controlled, mainly by hormones such as aldosterone. However, many conditions can lead to serum concentration being too low or too high.

Potassium plays an important role in nerve signalling and muscle communication.  It also assists in the transfer of nutrients into cells and the removal of waste products in the kidneys.

Potassium levels are very tightly controlled and either high or low levels can cause serious medical problems and emergencies such as abnormal heart rhythms.

What if Potassium Results Are High?

A raised blood potassium concentration is known as hyperkalaemia.

Many conditions can be associated with a high potassium level. Common causes include kidney disease and use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen. Other associated conditions include diabetes and Addison’s disease. This finding is often reviewed further with additional blood results and clinical investigation to clarify the cause.

A high potassium result can also occur because of cell damage during blood collection, such as when the arm is squeezed too tightly or blood is drawn very slowly. This is known as a haemolysed sample and is a common reason for an unexpectedly high potassium result; in these cases, the sample is often repeated.

A potassium level greater than 6 is generally treated as potentially dangerous and is often prioritised for immediate repeat sampling. Other possible causes of hyperkalaemia include kidney disease, medication side effects, or more rarely ingestion of potassium.

What if Potassium Results Are Low?

Low potassium can be associated with muscle weakness and palpitations. There are many possible causes, including side effects of medicines, loss of potassium from the body due to vomiting or diarrhoea, or insufficient dietary intake of potassium.

A potassium level of less than 3 can be dangerous and is generally treated as clinically significant.

When potassium is above 3, low levels are sometimes addressed with dietary changes (for example, eating a banana). Understanding the underlying cause of a low potassium result remains important, and the result is often reviewed further to clarify the reason.
